SAN ANTONIO – A local nonprofit is working with schools across the city to create gardens and teach kids about healthy eating and the science of gardening.
“Most kids are used to going to the grocery store to get their food and they have no idea that most of the produce they buy comes off a plant,” Ashton Ellis, the garden teacher at Gardopia Gardens said.
Gardopia Gardens was founded in 2015 and works with different groups across the city, including Blessed Sacrament Academy on 1135 Mission Road.
United Way of San Antonio supports the program at Blessed Sacrament Academy with funding. Their funds makes it possible for them to buy plants and other garden related materials.
Every Thursday, a member with the nonprofit comes to the academy to teach the children at the garden.
Ashley Velez, executive assistant at Blessed Sacrament, says families are also getting involved.
“We have family garden events. We just recently had one last week. So they get to come out and they get to plant their own vegetables, fruits,” Velez said.
By the end of the year, the nonprofit hopes to be working with a total of 20 schools.
The nonprofit is hosting a garden volunteer day event on Saturday, September 17 on their East Side farm located at 619 N New Braunfels.
