MP: Belarus is food self-sufficient, aims to find new markets – Belarus News (BelTA)

MINSK, 21 December (BelTA) – Belarus is self-sufficient in food and the country’s major task is to find new markets, Deputy Chairman of the Standing Commission on the Agricultural Policy of the House of Representatives Sergei Kravtsov told the media on 21 December, BelTA has learned.

“There is a food crisis, food shortage in the world. There are 8 billion people on the planet. Everyone needs food. It is not easy to provide everyone with food, the resources of the planet are limited. Belarus was right to start developing its agricultural sector. We have much to be proud of. There is a lot of work ahead however. according to the United Nations, there are already 100 million hungry people in the world and about 10 million more people go hungry every year,” Sergei Kravtsov said.

According to him, Belarus has achieved good results in agriculture and processing industry. “We are 96% self-sufficient in food. We are witnessing an interesting period of time, a redistribution of markets. Our task is to find and hold new markets,” the MP said.

A joint sitting of the two chambers of the Belarusian parliament took place in Minsk on 21 December. Deputy Prime Minister Leonid Zayats delivered a report “The Agro-Industrial Complex: Food Security, Efficient Export and Development Reserves”.
